You don’t need Spanish to dance in the DR — but you do need this
Nobody needs words to dance a bachata. But there IS a code on Dominican dance floors — and knowing it matters more than any phrase.

People ask me what Spanish they should learn before dancing in the Dominican Republic. I speak Spanish myself, so I could tell you it’s essential — but honestly? For the dancing, you need almost none. The atmosphere is relaxed, everyone dances with everyone, and a smile plus an open hand is a complete sentence.
The etiquette that does matter
You can ask anyone to dance — that’s the beauty of it. But there’s a clear code. If someone came with a partner, you ask the partner’s permission first. A nod, a gesture toward the dance floor, done — no vocabulary required. And when the song ends, you walk the person back to where you found them. Back to the partner, back to the table, back to their friends.
“Ask the partner first. Bring them back after. That’s the whole rulebook.”
Do that, and you’ll be pulled into more dances than you can handle. Skip it, and no phrasebook will save you.
No shared language needed — the music does the talking.
If you want a few words anyway
¿Bailamos? (shall we dance?), gracias, and un placer (a pleasure) after the dance. That’s genuinely all I use. Everything else happens in the music.
